I never knew my granda, he died when I was 7 months old but I'm told quite often he would just hold me for ages. I have pictures and visit his grave but I would love to have known what he sounded like.
Mum always told me stories about him, like how he would sit in his swivel chair, sitting on his hands twisting from side to side and my nana would be talking to him but he was never really listening, just knew when to say yes or no at the right times!
And then there was the time where the poodle attacked him and it's the only dog I wouldn't be allergic to (having asthma) but mum refused to get one!
The best thing which would scare my mum was when I was still quite little, I would come downstairs laughing and mum would ask why, so I'd reply "granda just told me a joke". I don't remember this though.
He was captured as a prisoner of war for 5 years all becuase he couldn't swim out to the boat which came to rescue them!
But most of all, like me he loved his holidays to Blackpool. Every year he went with my nana.
He worked hard for his family, never complained (which led to his death as he didn't tell anyone he was in pain I'm told).
I just wish I could have met him.
